Introduction
This year the festival has “Comedy in the Modern Time” as the main theme. The opening work, “Les Chaises” (The Chairs), is being staged in Asia for the first time; this is a reinterpretation of Theater of the Absurd master Eugene Ionesco’s classic, by renowned Swiss director Luc Bondy. “Der Goldene Drache” (Golden Dragon) is a cooperative effort by the Tainaner Ensemble and director Tilmann Kohler, of the Dresden State Opera House. Other works, such as “Breakfast,” “The Vanishing Horizon,” and “An Italian Straw Hat,” are also fine works of cross-border cooperation. Notable mentions are the hilarious “Rakugo Show,” from Japan, and “Play Bauhaus,” an exhibition of dynamic installations, from Germany.
